As an avant-garde accessory, wood watches has almost gone mainstream: searching for "wood watches" in Google yields dozens of watch brands. But from the wide range of selections, the Vejrhoj brand seems to break away from the pack - and proudly proclaiming its heritage with a look that is unmistakably Nordic.
Beginnings of Vejrhoj
Vejrhoj describes itself as an independent watch brand from Copenhagen, Denmark with a design philosophy centering on the ideas of simplicity and function.
Founder Janus Aarup partnered with designer Bo Bonfils to execute and launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the design and production aspects of the young company. The campaign was so successful such that the funding goal was achieved in just a few days.
As one of the first watch brands to merge natural hardwood, stainless steel and sapphire crystal glass with its collection of wood watches, it has certainly found its customer base through the crowdfunding website. As of writing, the wood watch brand still actively uses Kickstarter to fund its business.
The brand has become successful and was validated with a "Brand New Nordic 2017" award proclaiming it as the best upcoming Danish watch brand. It was also last year when the wood watch brand launched its new Elements collection that truly merged wood and steel on watch the dial.
Vejrhoj is clearly making a name in the niche of wood watches. It will be very interesting to know how this brand grows in the next few years - will it expand to other types of watches? To complementary products? We're all keen to see.
